A report indicates
that the gang leader of the terrorist group behind the Westgate Shopping Mall
attack is a lady by the name Samantha Lewthwaite . According to hostages who have been rescued from the mall, the terrorist
ring leader is a lady with a “British accent”.
Is it possible for a child
brought up in another man’s land to practise his father’s tradition? Is it fair
for a child to pull down what his father has built for years in one day? What is the only constant thing in life? Can a
man be punished for the sins committed by his son? Is it possible for everybody
to obey a laid down rules?
Life
seems to be cruel to some persons, while others are begging to escape death in
order to achieve their lifelong dreams, others seems to narrowly or
successfully escape its sting. I would say, Nelson Mandela is one of such
persons.
Child
abuse began in Nigeria many years ago through slavery and has since then,
become a big monster gradually crawling into families and eating up its
victims. Today, it’s regarded as the third most corrupt practices carried out
by Nigerians.
Every
day, stories are being told by its survivals, some are heard while others are
never told at all. Most of those more vulnerable are women and children, no one
seem to listen when they speak up while others who hear of it think it’s a mere
story
Things happen around us on a daily
basis which we may or may not know the cause. Just yesterday, Michael Douglas
an American actor and producer opened up about his past diagnosis, revealing
that oral sex, not smoking or drinking, caused his type of throat cancer.
In a candid new interview with U.K.'s
The Guardian, Douglas admits that his illness was caused by the human
papillomavirus (HPV).
It’s amazing how people turn peanuts
into millions of monies in return. Nigerian billionaire and Africa’s richest
man Aliko Dangote is obviously one of such. He started with a business loan of
=N=500,000 (Naira) given to him by his uncle when he was just 21 years old.
But today, he has been named the
Africa’s first $20 billion man, thereby becoming one of the top 25 richest men
in the world.
She had great dreams but death was around the corner
to stop their accomplishment. She never knew her life was going to be short.
She had wept and mourn for the dead around her, not knowing she was going to
be the next. She had made prayers for her future asking the Almighty to help
her attain them.
But where is she now? she lay lifelessly in the cold arms
of death not knowing she ever existed.
As I tried to remember her beautiful face salted water
began rushing out of my red eyes then I began to write this;
When growing up as a child
felt so great, dancing and playing around in my birth dress, having nothing to
think about, and going to school as though I was doing my parents a favour.
When sickness calls, my
mother cried as though I was going to die in the next few minutes. Whether my
dress was clean or not was never a bother to me, because my mother had to bear
my shame for me.
"Rose! Rose!! Anita is dead, I just heard of it
yesterday”! Glory said.
“It’s a lie” I retorted, “I couldn’t believe it myself,”she added.
“But I saw her around school in the evening, what must
have gone wrong?
As I murmured these questions, my eyes became pregnant
with tears as stream of salted water began to find its way down my cheek. “What
must have happened to that young and promising lady”? I continued.
Many undergraduates nurse the joy of graduating and
being offered a job in an office, so they study hard to graduate with summer
cum laude to make their dream come through. For some, they get theirs on a
platter of gold while for others, the search is endless. Since the need for a
white collar job continues to increase, what hope have our youths?
One of Nigeria’s
most celebrated writers and accomplished scholar that played a pivotal role in
the growth of African literature, Professor Chinua
Achebe, last year published his sad memoir of the Biafran war of 1967-1970,
which led to the death of more than two million Nigerians. Upon publication, the
book generated criticisms among Nigerians from the west.
Interestingly,
Achebe and the Yoruba juggernaut, Wole Soyinka over the years with their mighty
pens have tried to fight corruption, which has remained unaddressed in the country;this was why Achebe publicly declined several
awards from the Nigerian government, one of which was an attempt to name him a
Commander of the Federal Republic in 2004.
Academic success means different thing to
different people. For some, it's passing through school with acceptable grades,
to some; it's coming out tops in an academic setting. In defining academic
success, it is important to look at the two sides to the coin- importance of
academic success and how to achieve academic success.
I was shocked when I heard
that the Federal Government had just discovered about 84 legitimate and legal
routes through which people could come or go out of Nigeria, while about 1,497
illegal routes that entered the country were also been uncovered.
This could possibly
explain the reason for the continuous increase in our population. Sometimes,
when I see the Alamajaries, I wonder
if they came into the country through the sea or were they actually given visas.
These people flood into the country with their entire village even without the
custom officers being aware.
Though the government has moved into action to
handle the situation but be careful, for those living close to the boundaries before
they come from nowhere and hick jack your goats and fowls.
Sitting with her face
resting between her legs, she was weeping profusely. Becky had failed another
course and in all has bagged six Fs within two semesters. “What did I not do to
make sure I pass this course?” on and on she went as she sniffed some phlegm
back into her nose. She had managed to gain admission into school to the
department her parents had always wanted her to be.
She has never liked
school from childhood but her parents being career inclined pushed her in,
noticing her nonchalance, they ensured she stayed back in school for extra
moral lessons yet her brain couldn’t adjust.
What
words do you think would be enough to say to this 23-year-old
pregnant Adaeze Mba who confessed that she had sold her unborn baby for
N200,000, before its actual birth?.
The
lady was also arrested for conniving with her husband to sell their neighbour’s
four-year-old son for N400, 000. She
also said that she and her husband, Chibueze, had sold two other children for
N700, 000.
The
funniest part of the story was that in March 2013, she and her husband sold
their neighbour’s son, whom she claimed was following her around in, they
succeeded in selling him for N400, 000 and relocated to Calabar after the
deal.
What
level of poverty would make a right thinking mother to think up such a callous
idea?
It’s important to
understand that there is a difference between “privacy” and “secrecy”. Every
relationship should be built on trust and to achieve this, there is need to
trust and trust comes by open communication from both partners. Without trust,
there is no respect and without respect, there is no intimacy.
As long as two people
have made up their minds to be committed to each other, love and care for one
another, there should be room for privacy but not secrecy.
You might wonder: “how
will one partner have privacy and not be secretive”?
Ben Underwoodtaught is blind; both
of his eyes were removed (cancer) when he was 3. Yet, he plays basketball,
rides on a bicycle, and lives a quite normal life. He taught himself to use
echo location to navigate around the world. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THAT?
In 2012, the richest man on earth award was won by Carlos Slim Helu, a Mexican born in
1940. He earns his $69 billion through communications, technology, finance,
retailing, and through his position as chairman and Chief Executive of a mobile phone carrier named America
Movil and a telecommunications company called Telmex.
Despite philanthropic efforts, Slim has been criticized for
his wealth, as Mexico has a high poverty rate. It is thought that Telmex has
monopolised the landline telecommunications market.
In a world where things keep falling apart virtually every
day as a result of varied reasons that range from politics to social, economic
and cultural factors, one cannot but surrender when death calls and the
grave yard still remains the richest place to visit.
The burial of the literary icon Prof. Chinua Achebe, who died
at the 82 year old in United States on March 21, 2013 was scheduled to take
place on Thursday been May 23, 2013 in Ogidi a community in Anambra state,
still sends no special feeling in the air.
